Which NFL division is the best

To determine which division is the most successful, I gathered data from all 8 divisions over the past 5 years (2021-2025) including: total regular season wins, total playoff appearances, total playoff wins, super bowl appearances, super bowl wins, average team win percentage. I gathered all the data and combined them all using a  metric I created called Division score.  

Division score considers five categories:

• Regular-season wins

• Playoff appearances

• Playoff victories

• Super Bowl appearances

• Super Bowl victories

Each division total was converted into a percentage of league total. For example the AFC West has two super bowls over the last 5 years which would be 40%.  I also weighted division totals  to favor playoff success.

Weighted division categories :

• Regular-season wins -20%

• Playoff appearances -20%

• Playoff victories -30%

• Super Bowl appearances - 15%

• Super Bowl victories -15%

For example, the AFC West accounted for 40% of all Super Bowl victories over the last five seasons. Multiplying 40 by the 15% weight gives the AFC West 6.0 points in that category. The same process is repeated for the other four categories, and the results are added together to calculate the final Division Score. 

After calculating every division score here are the results: 

Looking at the results the NFC West comes out to be the best and its only close opponent is the AFC West. One interesting coincidence is 1 and 2 are both west, 3 and 4 are both east, 5 and 6 are both north, and 7 and 8 are both south.

Unlike the AFC West the NFC West was not just carried by one division. The NFC West has had many teams doing the heavy lifting like the Rams, 49ers, Seahawks,  and sadly the Cardinals did not have as much success but they made the playoffs once in 2021. It makes sense that the NFC West had the highest division score because of both depth and postseason success.

Overall, the data shows that ongoing postseason success is key in shaping division strength. Many divisions had winning teams, but the NFC West consistently paired regular-season success with playoff wins. This allowed it to secure the top spot in the Division Score rankings.
